<1>比較級・最上級の作り方のまとめ
ⅰ)基本的には「比較級は –er」「最上級は –est」をつける。
tall – taller – tallest、old – older – oldestなど
ⅱ)語尾が「e」で終わるもの
→ 「-r」「-st」をつける。
large – larger – largest、wide – wider – widestなど
ⅲ)語尾が「子音+y」で終わる動詞
→ 「y」を「i」に変えて「-er」「-est」をつける。
happy – happier – happiest、early – earlier – earliestなど
ⅳ)語尾が「短母音 + 子音」で終わるもの
→ 子音を重ねて「-er」「-est」をつける。
big – bigger – biggest、hot – hotter – hottestなど
ⅴ)長いもの(一般的には3音節以上の語)
→ 「more」「most」をつける。
difficult – more difficult – most difficultなど
<2>特殊な形の比較級・最上級をもつもの
原級 - 比較級 - 最上級
「よい(形容詞)」 good – better – best
「よく、上手に(副詞)」 well – better – best
very much – better – best
※ここでのvery muchは、「like~very much」のvery much
Mary sings well. →メアリーは上手に歌う。
Mary sings better than John. →メアリーはジョンよりも上手に歌う。
I like this car very much. →私はこの車がとても好きだ。
I like this car better than that. →私はあの車よりもこの車のほうが好きだ。
I like this car the best of all. →私はすべての中でこの車が最も好きだ。
※この場合のtheは省略できる。(very muchは副詞だから)
原級 - 比較級 - 最上級
「悪い」 bad – worse – worst
His grade is bad. →彼の成績は悪い。
His grade is worse than hers. →彼の成績は彼女の成績よりも悪い。
※hers=her grade
原級 - 比較級 - 最上級
「多くの」 many – more – most
「多くの」 much – more – most
「more」単独で比較級、「most」は、単独で最上級である。
more、mostの原級は、「many(+数えられる名詞)」または、
「much(+数えられない名詞)」である。
John has many books. →ジョンはたくさんの本を持っている。 John has more books than Mary.
→ジョンはメアリーよりも多くの本を持っている。
※than=「~より」がある場合、比較級が必要になる。
※「beautiful」など長い形容詞の比較級・最上級を作る場合につける
「more」「most」と混同しないように注意。

manyまたはmuchの比較級は、単独で「more」であるが、
beautifulの比較級「more beautiful」は、セットで比較級となる。
原級 - 比較級 - 最上級
「ほとんど~ない」 little – less – least
※little+数えられない名詞
<3>比較級を強調して「ずっと~、はるかに~」というときは、
「much+比較級」、「far+比較級」を使う。veryは比較級の前では使えない。
John is taller than Bill. →ジョンはビルよりも背が高い。
John is much taller than Bill. →ジョンはビルよりもずっと背が高い。
<4>比較級を含んだ文で、「少しだけ~」というときは、「a little」を使う。
Bill sings better than John. →ビルはジョンよりも上手に歌う。
Bill sings a little better than John.
→ビルはジョンよりも少しだけ上手に歌う。
<5>最上級を強調して「ずば抜けて~、抜群に~」というときは、
「much+the+最上級」、「by far+the+最上級」を使う。
※the very + 最上級=「まさしく~」
